Life of Adem Jasharit
Adem Jashari was born on 28 of November 1955 in Prekaz, Municipality of Skenderaj. Adem was the third son of Shaban and Zahide Jashari. Adem Jashari took the first lessons at home country and finished high school in Skenderaj. Adem Jashari was educated in a patriotic spirit in the family environment, because the father of Adem Jashari, Shaban Jashari, was a teacher in several villages of Drenica. The teacher’s mission was moral, national and patriotic that Shaban Jashari continued and applied to his children and many generations, in order to educate and train entire generation in the spirit of patriotism and by cultivating and raising national consciousness. The act of Ahmet Dalia sacrifice was also an additional lesson to demonstrate heroic work of locals that had began long ago opposing with weapons Serbian chetnik gangs. Therefore, this message was best understood by his son Adem, who at the young age was engaged in patriotic – illegal activity, actively taking part in demonstrations of spring 1981. Immediately after that, another event which has given the figure to Adem Jashari and his family, is that the Serbian government must not be allowed to continue its rule, was a resistance of Nebi and Tahir Meha against Yugoslav military forces. This act of sacrifice for the homeland of the Tahir e Nebi Meha has left deep impression in the spirit and determination of Shaban, Adem and Hamëz Jahari, who at the funeral of these martyr, made a vow in the front of Tahir Meta’s body “The war you started, we will continue until the last drop of blood”. Determination to sacrifice for the homeland was transcendent act of Adem Jashari and his family. This proves that his orientation in searching the path of freedom and how to make effort and to sacrifice to liberate the country from violence and terror of the Serbian authorities. Thus, patriotic activity of Adem Jashari, has started in 80’s to take new directions by becoming a member of illegal patriotic organization in that time. During this period he has distributed tracts, through which was required mobilization of people for liberation. In the Adem Jahari group also were included patriots as: Ilaz Kodra, Jakup Nura, Sahit Jashari, Hashim Thaçi, Sami Lushtaku, Fadil Kodrat etc. While Adem Jashari for its national and patriotic activity will be known also for organization of strong protests that took place in Skederaj in 1989, in a sign of revolt and frustration against the constitutional amendments and revocation of Kosovo’s Constitution of 1974, made by Serbia.
As a continuation of national activity, in 1989 has begun merging of several different patriotic homeland groups within and outside Kosovo in People’s Movement of Kosovo. Activities of LCP would become pastoral of national wide liberation movement and at the same time for the blood feud reconciliation. However, after the cessation of all Kosovo’s institution in 1990, idea to organize them in military aspect gets a new dimension, from LCP, which was not operating entirely in public. This phenomenon was reflected especially after the 1990, when Adem Jashari committed an armed action on the police station in Skenderaj, in which action a Serbian police officer was hurt. Other actions that has for a subject to attack Serbs patrols and police stations, in which participated Adem Jashari with others, are those in Mitrovica, at Ura e Gjakut, in Shipol, Runik, Drenas etc. Whereas with his commandment are committed armed actions in Shtime, Prizren, Klina etc. Operations/actions’s line of this armed formation in maintained in relation between Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania since 1990. Except some other groups that have also exercised on military ranges in Albania, the only formation (nucleus) of Adem Jashari was not dissolved. A group of activists from Deçani where arrested, while other groups where not loud.
On the 3rd November 1991, in Albania went a group of activist to conduct appropriate military exercises and to be trained for armed struggle. Adem Jashari who also led a group, was a part of this group together with Ilaz Kodra, Sahit Jashari, Fadil Kodra and Murat Jashari. After the completion of training, the group returned in Drenica on 7th of December 1991, equipped with weapons. This group was tasked to expand the ranks.
Serbian secret services have fall into the trail of armed formation and Serbian police was ready to raid its surrounding and his capture. On December 30, 1991, Serb police – military expedition undertook an action to capture the group. But, these activists where not armed and where not trained to be surrender, as was expressed Adem Jashari itself.
Adem Jashari, his brother who has been on holidays, Rifat, Hamëz Jashari, Fadil Kodra, Ilaz Kodra and Sahit Jashari, decided to fight and to break the siege by all means. Despite the police has engaged large number of people, even heavy technique, armored vehicles and helicopters, after the group resistance failed to defeat fighters. This event made great resonance.
From many sides of Drenica, on that day and that evening had moved people who were willing to join resistance of Prekaz. After the clash with Serbian police forces, the entire group of Adem Jashari passes into the illegality, until the beginning of the liberation war in Kosovo.
On April 5th, 1993, in the house of Adem Jashari was held an important meeting. Besides of members of armed formation Adem Jashari, in the meeting were present also political activists. At this meeting was decided to expand military formation.
Precisely at this meeting Adem Jashari proposes that carried actions in Kosovo, to be made on behalf of "Kosovo Army". At this meeting was decided that as the Army Commander to be appointed Adem Jashari. Attacks on Serbian police forces already have coordination. By coordination, expansion and restructuring of the armed groups was created the Kosovo Liberation Army (1993). Adem Jashari together with Hamza and many comrades in later years were even more organized and have taken several actions against the Serbian army and police. For this national and patriotic activities Serbian authorities had organized criminal procedure, where the District Court of Pristina, in absentia, in 1997 was imposed a prison term of twenty years for Adem Jasharin, Ilaz Kodrën, Sahit Jasharin, Fadil Kodrën, Jakup Nurën, Zenun Kodrën dhe Rexhep Selimin, while with 10 years was “condemned” Hashim Thaqi. In this case we can say that Adem Jashari was condemned not only with 20 years, but 6O years imprisonment, because Serbia had sentenced him three times by 2O years in prison in absentia, in 1991, then 1996, 1997.
Combat unit of Prekazi, is identified by the name of Adem Jashari, due to the high strategic and military qualities, thanks to his character and military features. All people interested in an armed uprising to solve the problem of Kosovo were interested to contact personally Adem Jashari. His military core, his structure was armed and ready to grow and expand.
Intensification of armed KLA actions begins with the September 1997 with attack on 12 police stations. From armed action carried by KLA against police forces, after the addition of systematic violence by Serbian forces in Kosovo, KLA have been moved to another stage, the direct match with Serbian forces, then in battle, at the end of November 1997, when in Rezalla e Re fight occured with multiple police forces of Serbia. In this way the battle interrupted column of Serb forces that had raided attack in village Vojnik, where a day earlier, Serb police patrols were hit by gunfire from one of the earliest fighters of the KLA, Abedin Rexha – Sandokani. This battle was lead by Adem Jashari and other fighters as Mujë Krasniqi, Rexhep Selimi, Sylejman Selimi, Ilaz Kodra, Ilaz Dërguti etc.. This is the first battle and victory of KLA unit. This great battle echoed in public opinion.
On 28 November 1997, at the funeral of teacher from Llausha Halit Geci, who was killed by Serb forces during the withdrew after failing two days ago, the KLA came out in the political and military scene of Kosovo. Open emergence of the KLA has made Serbian security forces not to feel security in the Drenica area. They started with barricades at certain checkpoints with special reinforcements. But, as far as KLA structure was strengthened and spread on the ground, the Serbian reinforcements were added. Provocations and attempted attacks of Serbian police did not cease.
Serbian police, with its special units organized an attack on the house of the Jashari on January 22nd, 1998. The attack began in the early hours of the morning, and was fulminant, but encountered on resistance and agility of the Jashari family, which was prepared and always guarding day and night. Serbian special commando unit was withdrew after half an hour, because the members of Jashari family who were inside the house responded with fire. It was the second attack of Serb forces on the Adem Jashari house. In this clash were injured two Jashari young girls.
As a counter-response to the Serb forces on 28 February 1998, a comrade group led by Adem Jashari attacked Serbian police patrols killing four policemen and wounding two of them. Thus, in the 90's, Jashari family had become the main target of attacks by Serb military and police forces that were deployed in Kosovo. Adem Jashari didn’t stop for a moment military actions against Serbian military and police forces until his heroic sacrifice.
Adem Jashari was married Adile Rama from Akrashtica and had five children (three boys and two girls), Lulzimi, Fitimi, Kushtrimi, Shqipja and Marigona.

Liberation of Kosovo is the work of several generations of the Albanian people for national liberation and reunification. National Movement for liberation from Serb conqueror has continuity since 1913, when the Conference of Ambassadors in London [1] unfairly halved Albania and left outside its borders more than half of the Albanian people.
During World War II Albanians except dream of liberation and national unity, had created the illusions fed from the right and from the left that after the War Albanian lands with united and ethnic Albania would be formed. About this issue there have been efforts, initially from the right Albanian a part of which had fallen into the lap of fascism and from the Albanian left side, even Yugoslav left that after the war National Liberation War [2] Kosovo would join Albania. [3] On the basis of this statement, National Council for Flat Kosovo of Dukagjini [4], on the the Bujan Conference of 31st December 1943 and 1st and 2nd January of 1944 [5] was declared for the unification of Kosovo with Albania. These illusions will disappear from 8-10 July of 1945, when the Conference of the Regional Committee in Prizren [6] decided that Kosovo to be annexed to Serbia [7] on the grounds that Serbia was more developed and have more opportunity than Albania to contribute to the economic development of Kosovo?! Thus Serbia made official new conquest over Kosovo, but never managed to to quell Albanian liberation dream for national unity.
After World War II [8], the National Movement for the liberation for national unity even in difficult conditions, of a savage slavery, classic conquest, a chauvinist and communist Yugoslav terror, never has stopped political activities in clandestine conditions. This activity of the National Movement, its apex of organization of the action reaches in the last three decades of the twentieth century. The apex of this movement is undoubtedly the Kosovo Liberation Army, which, being a powerful instrument of unity across the left-right Albanians, and even beyond Albanians managed to accomplish a great part of national aspiration. Victory reached by Albanian people, and assisted by the international community in June 1999 is a great victory. Only idealists had unwavering faith in victory, so started with planning, organization and courageous military action to liberate Kosovo.
It is natural that in this great and nation planning and implementation, organizations and individuals have had their undoubted impact and contribution. Viewed in this context, the impact of the Jashari family has its distinctive peculiarities, not comparable, unique and definitive in this great national victory achieved in the last century.
From the beginning of the XX century, Drenica become one of the centres of the National Movement for liberation. In all the important events of the last century, is distinguished Prekazi with brave and important national activities. History tells us manly fortitude of Ahmet Delia who was successfully facing with axe Serbian Chetnik gangs. This resistance will be followed during the years of the Kaçake Movement [9] and then in Drenica War, 1944-1945. [10]
Prekazi was distinguished even in the first year of Albanian Spring, when on May 13, 1981, and Tahir and Nebi Meha fought bravely against Yugoslavian special units.
At this time in the scene starts to reveald Jashari family, Shaban Jashari with sons, Hamza and Adem, who over the graves of martyrs Nebi and Tahir Meha, swear [11] that will continue the fight for the liberation of the nation's unification. Genealogy of Jashari family is old. Lower Prekazi is consisted of four neighbourhoods: neighbourhood Jasharaj, Kodra, Meha and Lushtaku. Three first neighbourhoods were created by three brothers: Jashari, Kadriu and Meha, so are from the same blood, while Lushtaks have come later in Prekaz. Jashari had three sons, while the family of Adem Jashari, derives from the Jashari third son, Murat, from which then are created other generations of our family: Fazliu, Murat and Shaban. Shaban (Murat) Jashari was married with Zahidja, and gave birth to three sons: Rifat, Hamza and Adem. [12] Thus, the Jashari family tree continues to expand and increase being renewed by generations day by day.
However, Shaban Jashari the love for the homeland and nation had emerged in the 50s’ of last century, but the most serious resistance, most public of Jashari family that will spread occurs in December of 1991, when the armed forces were faced with Serbian police. On the morning of December 30, Serbian police forces rush to Jasharajs in order to imprisoned Adem Jashari and his armed formation. In history there are also random events, but this of Jashari family, for Adem Jashari and his armed formation was not coincidence, the event was expected, prepared, planned and successfully implemented.
Adem Jashari years ago was organized in the National Movement, the Popular Movement for the Republic of Kosovo later called LCP [13]. In the early 90s’, he had completed military preparations in Albania in order to form the Army for the liberation and unification of Kosovo with Albania and other areas. To this goal Adem Jashari and his family will stay faithful and consistent to their glorious fall with 5, 6 and 7 of March, 1998. For this high human, political and national purpose Adem Jashari had the blessing of his parents, brothers’ support and approval of all the Jashari family. This willingness, purpose and courage did not have for close family interest or any other small-minded interest, because they knew that whatever they were doing, were doing for the interest of the nation and homeland. Jashari family was aware of the high severity, but with conscientiously and confident that without war, without blood and painful sacrifice there is no liberation and national unity, entered the military actions of selfless, to made historic turn in our national movement. Thi willingness and courage Jashari family has shown several times, on 30 December of 1991, 22nd January, 1998, and finally in March of national pride and glory, in March of proliferation and mass mobilization of Albanians for the liberation struggle.
On 30 December 1991, the resistance of Shaban Jashari family from armed formation of Adem Jashari, the youngest in the history of Kosovo, strongly warned the emergence of higher national, political and military organization for liberation and unification of our nation.[14] All liberation armed formations formed later in our national spaces, will drink the water of inspiration in this inexhaustible Albanian fount, which will serve at any time for education of each generation of homeland and liberty lovers. Maltreatment, disdain and maltreatment of Albanians is stretched across Kosovo. Few of them were those who wanted to see and feel the daily humiliation that was done to Albanians. From 30 December of 1991 Jashari neighbourhood, especially Shaban Jashari family is constantly monitored by police and military forces of the enemy, but Jasharis proudly continue living in their homes, in their property, in their Kosovo. During all this time, with a brief absence, the Jashari family and Prekazi wsas monitored by vigilant guards of Adem Jashari armed formation. In Prekaz nothing was taking place spontaneously or accidentally. Jashari family continue to live under full curfew, but confident in victory.
Another important event in the history of the Jashari family that showed the vitality of militant mobilization of the large Albanian family was on 22 January 1998. [15] The attack happened that day on this family from saboteurs Serb, with the main goal for disappearance of the family and the Albanian resistance for freedom. As was said by those who have experienced that, the attack was fleeting but the response was fleeting also. Attack of the saboteurs Serbs on the Jashari family was not surprising, because mobilization was fast, brave and highly professional. This mobilization of the Jashari family is a valuable addition to the patriotic family with high military preparetion. Such an attack and sudden of saboteur have been surprised by garrison professional soldiers, but which was not of the Jashari family. Surprised saboteurs escape stealthily "with tail under the saddle". But, two girls Jasharis remain injured.
This attack was another serious warning that Serbia is ready to practice violence on every Albanian family and to combat over Kosovo Albanians. Drenica and Kosovo were all put under siege iron. The Albanian politics in Pristina still was under the passive observation. The risk of war, massacres and violence from was everywhere. Upcoming arising events will confirm this.
A little more than a month after the attack of the Serbian saboteur on Jashari family, more precisely on February 28th and March 1st 1998 [16] had occurred in Qirez and Serb massacre in Likoshan of Drenica. [17] During the attack within two days were killed 24 people, mostly unarmed civilian people. Loss had many families from these villages, but the worst calamity struck the Likoshan and Ahmeti family and Sejdiu from Qirezi.
With these attacks, Serbia was hitting the core of Albanian society – the family. After the massacre of Qirez in Likoshan, police and military machinery will attack the Jasharis of Prekazi, in order to liquidate Jashari family, to liquidate the core of the KLA and its commander Adem Jashari. The enemy sought that after this in Kosovo Kosovo to rule fear of violence, terror of Serbian massacres and so extinguish the Albanian efforts for freedom and national state.
5, 6 and 7 March 1998 [18], Jashari family for the third time, with great force and military police was attacked from Serbia. Serbia had taken so seriously legendary fight with Jashari. Serbia in Kosovo killed, massacred, half erased many Albanian families, because they were Albanians, because Serbia demanded the expulsion and extermination of their planning and perpetuation of Serbian rule over Kosovo. Attack of the Jashari family, was not only because they were Albanian, but because they were members of combatants, because they were the core of the KLA, they were the example of loving family, because they caused to Serbia losses and because Serbia souk revenge on a family in order to spread fear terror in every Albanian hearth. Attack on Jashari family was not only a goal of eliminating violence and killing Albanian KLA commander, but the main purpose was killing Albanians courage to fight for the liberation of national unity. Even in the March attack as in other attacks Jasharis were not surprised. Again they responded to the attack by "seven to seventy," an old Albanian tradition. Any member of the Jashari family was not a victim, all are captains and heroes: the last warrior fell, the twentieth, of Jashari family, according to the data was Kushtrim [19] aged 13 to 14 years. Such was the school of patriotic education in the Jashari family in Prekazi of Drenica. A school that will be remembered from all generations and eternally.
We can conclude that befittingly Jashari family has a special and unique role, not only in our national history, but also to the universal, for the preparation of readiness of population in liberation war, has the unique role of the unrivalled organization of KLA, has unprecedented role for massive mobilization of people in the liberation war, support for the war by the international community and has unparalleled merit for freedom and national prosperity, for the Republic of Kosovo as an independent, sovereign and democratic state. Such families honour each nation, but not all nations have such brilliance.
In each anniversary, Jasharis who survived, renewed Jasharis, in their faces did not have scowl, tears of disappointment, but on every face of Jasharis you sees love, generosity, pride to achieve national victory. Even in this aspect, even in the new Kosovo Jasharis prove and radiate their inherited family uniqueness that is to be envied by all Albanians wherever they are.

Shaban was born in the year 1924. Shaban was a farmer. However, after World War II, for some time he had exercised the profession of teachers, but because of patriotic activity he left the teaching process. He without contradiction decided to deal with land preparation and education of children in the spirit of patriotism. Adem's mother, Zahidja came from a prominent patriotic family of Galicaj.
When Shaban returned from the army, began to work as a teacher in Skenderaju ntil was imprisoned by the authorities on charges of being "inappropriate”. At the time when Shaban was imprisoned he has been 28 years.
After the imprisonment of Shaban, Murat was faced each time with great difficulty, ranging from economic problems, different pressures up to his isolation from authorities and environment for six years.
Shabani has always been accompanied and followed by authorities, up to the last moment of his life. Government has considered him as a teacher and intellectual of that time in Drenica, therefore UDB was prevented from two things: first, why father teaches his children in right way, and the second, great authority in Drenica. Therefore, the government wanted to send him to work as a teacher in Gjilan, in Gollak, but he had refused.
Mostly he worked in Tërdec, Obri, Prekaz, Klinë, Prelloc, Skënderaj, etc. Asa teachers he worked since 1949-1952, when was imprisoned by the government at that time.
Even during World War II, is said that Shaban had many problems as with the Serbs as well as with the partisans.
He was accompanying Shaban Polluzha from the beginning until the end.
After the World War II, however, problems with the authorities did not end, but just were increasing.
Hamëz Jashari was born in 1950 in Prekazi i Ulet. He was the second son of mixha (uncle) Shaban.
He finished elementary school in the village school, high school in Skenderaj and attended economy high school.
He was worker in ammunition factory in Skenderaj. On January 30, 1991 has joined the brother and was with him until the death.
Hamëz Jashari had a special love for art. He uses to write and draw very beautiful. He loved the theatre and he also played several musical instruments and had ability to sang beautifully.
He was married with Feride Mecini from Klina e Eperme in Skenderajt and had nine children. Hamza's wife, five girls and two boys have died in war, while Bekimi and Besarta survived the war.
Hamza together with his brother, Adem participated in strikes against Serbian military and police forces. Yugoslav police forces and the Yugoslav army attacked his house in March 1998, in which Jashari fell heroically together with fifty-six members of his family. This is a unique case in the history of warfare.
In 1973, Hamza had completed military service with Rifat’s guarantee, then went and stayed about 5 months in Germany, but did not want to stay anymore and said: "Germany is not for me." He returned from Germany and was employed in the Ammunition Factory, while Rifat was still there. Simply Hamza has did not like diaspora and was not affected by foreign country.
Hamza along with Rifat has gone to Turkey to pick up pamphlet, at which pamphlets was mainly written "Kosovo Republic".

Adem Jashari was born on 28 of November 1955 in Prekaz, Municipality of Skenderaj. Adem was the third son of Shaban and Zahide Jashari. Adem Jashari took the first lessons at home country and finished high school in Skenderaj.
